Pride and Arrogance

Two dangerous things any person could nurture. We are in this earth because of it. Had Lucifer been so kind as to swallow his pride to prostrate to Adam we still be in the Garden of Eden. History is replete with arrogance and pride. The latest of which is the quagmire of the Coalition Forces in Iraq. They are so arrogant of their military might that they did not consider the repercussions of their action. A worst fate befell the Persian Empire, when Genghis Khan send messengers to the Emperor Court the Royal entourage mocked and put to death the poor messengers for demanding something preposterous. They did not listen at all and their pride and arrogance led Genghis Khan to invade them. When they were capture it is said that Genghis Khan pours molten silver and lead into their ears since it’s the only thing they will listen to.

That feeling that we are superior to others because of what we have done and accomplished or that we belong to a certain family, clan, or tribe is one symptom of arrogance. It’s alright to be proud of what we are but to be arrogant that is totally a different story. Worst mistake in history are due to peoples arrogance and pride. Sometimes a rift in relationship will go unhealed for decades and even generation because of pride - it such a big amount to pay for anyone that nurture it.

One way or the other we become a victim of this vices either through boasting and over confidence of what we have especially during time of success. Sometimes things go into our head that our feet leaves the ground and that we feel that we are above everyone else. The only cure to this is to constantly remember that the best among us is those that are best in the eyes of God. Naturally, those who are best in the eyes of God will never admit that they are - since if they do then they wouldn’t be best in the eyes of God.

However, let us not be over humble too or we end up being the same with the person who says “I am the humblest person in the world and in humility nobody can beat me.” Ehem!!! Can you say that again…
